Engagement sessions are such a fun moment—they’re the perfect way to celebrate your season of love, capture your chemistry, and get comfortable in front of the camera before your wedding day. But one of the first questions couples ask me is “What should we wear?”
As a Michigan-based photographer who specializes in dreamy, documentary-style, film-inspired photography, I’ve seen firsthand how the right outfits can elevate your photos while still feeling like you. So whether your session takes you to the shores of Lake Michigan, a cozy cider mill, or a downtown rooftop, here’s what to wear to look effortlessly magical—no stress, no stiff poses.
1. Dress for the Season (and the Scenery)
Michigan weather has moods, and each season tells a different love story.
- Spring – Soft florals, pastels, and flowy fabrics pair perfectly with blossoming trees and golden hour glow.
- Summer – Lean into breezy dresses, linen shirts, and earthy tones that pop against wildflower fields or lake views.
- Fall – The ultimate cozy season. Think warm neutrals, layers, knits, boots, denim, and maybe a hat for flair.
- Winter – Embrace snowy romance with chic coats, scarves, boots, and cozy textures like wool or faux fur.
Pro tip: If we’re hiking, walking along the dunes, or dancing in the woods, wear shoes you can move in—and bring a backup pair if needed!
2. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of overly matching outfits. Instead, choose color palettes that complement each other. Shoot for muted earth tones, soft neutrals, or subtle pops of color. Layer in texture with knits, denim, lace, or corduroy for visual interest without being distracting.
